Own an original artwork – that's not made by one of your kids. Buy or browse at the Atkinson Gallery Summer Show.

London and Bristol have the Affordable Art Fair, Street has the Atkinson Gallery Summer Show.   OK, so I may be pushing it a bit to make the comparison with the famous international contemporary art fair. But the Summer Show, held at the nationally recognised gallery at Millfield School,  does work on the same basic principle: offering original contemporary art for sale at prices that don’t entail taking out a second mortgage. You can pop in to buy art or just enjoy the exhibition.

Now in its 27th year, the exhibition showcases original works by artists from Somerset and around the UK – all selected by a panel of judges – ranging in price from £70 to £500.

Detachment (detail) by Anna Jagger

The artworks come in all shapes, sizes and different mediums, including a vast stitched acrylic canvas (can you call it a canvas if its made from acrylic?), etchings, prints, photographs, abstracts and figurative, a piece made from old fishing nets, well as more conventional landscapes.

View over Brendon Hills by Joanna Commings

This picture may appear to be a painting but it’s actually photographic.

Cyclamen (detail) by Robert Harper-Holdcroft

Do not adjust your set. It’s supposed to look like this.

Holoscene by Lisa Kibble

The future’s orange – and yellow.

Norfolk Lady (detail) by Jo Norman

You might recognise this painting; it’s on the Show poster.

Volume of Desire (detail) by Gillian Hawkins

Not just pictures but ceramics, sculptures and small installations too. And everything’s for sale.

Horizon by Martin Harman

Even if you don’t buy anything,  it’s still enjoyable to have a browse around the gallery – and you’re only a few minutes away from the shops and cafes in Clark’s Village, if that tempts. The Show is open Monday-Saturday, 9.30am-5pm until Friday 4 August. Admission free; you have to go through the school Gatehouse.  Easy parking right opposite.

Atkinson Gallery, Millfield School Street, Somerset, BA16 0YD.  Tel 01458 444322.

I thoroughly enjoy reading your weekly email and this week is no exception. Just a thought, if the cocktail is shaken, surely all the prosecco bubbles will disappear?

I think this comment should appear on the cocktail post? In any case, the recipe calls for the prosecco to be added after the shaking…
