Balance is restored

Home-based holistic massage treatments including deep tissue, Indian head massage, hot stones, hot lava shells and reiki

I don’t know about you but when it comes to a massage, I’m not always up for hoofing it up to a spa and sitting around in a fluffy bath robe, flipping magazines along with a gaggle of other women on their girls’ day out. Sometimes I prefer things a little more low key, a bit more personal.  So when a friend recommended Sarah MacDermot Holistic Massage Therapy, who offers a whole range of holistic massage and other treatments in her home – or your own– I booked myself in.

Trained in holistic massage therapy – she’s a member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT) – Sarah offers a range of massage treatments including deep tissue, Indian head, hot stones, hot lava shells and reiki.  She’ll bring her gear – massage couch for full body, praying mantis chair for head, back and shoulder, and all her candles, oils and lotions – over to your place, or you can go to her home in the Dorset village of Cattistock, not far from Yeovil (which is what I did).

Sarah creates a fabulously relaxing atmosphere, with a log fire, low lighting, candles and all, but it’s her warm personality that really puts you at ease. We chatted about my lifestyle (far too little exercise, far too much booze) and stress levels (far too many teenage kids) and any special concerns. Apparently, massage boosts your body’s seratonin levels which can then help reduce fatigue and lessen production of the stress hormone cortisol – so bring it on!

I had the Full Body Massage, with some deep tissue work in there too.  I can honestly say it was the most thorough massage I’ve ever had. Using a blend of natural aromatic ingredients and essential oils,  Sarah sensed intuitively where the problem areas were, and worked away all the knots. It was pretty firm at times but she had some corkers to deal with, especially around my shoulders/base of my neck – that stress thing again.

No waves on the beach or whale singing muzak here, by the way,  though if you really wanted it, I’m sure she could oblige. Instead, Sarah’s put together eclectic, soothing playlists – from Mozart through to Pink Floyd, African Tibetan, handpans, piano, guitar and plenty in between (she’s lived and worked all over the world).

The massage itself lasted an hour and half.  Sarah then left me alone for a period of ‘quiescence’ to absorb and relax (or in my case, snore) for 10-15 minutes or so before returning to give me some lime and clove-infused water to sip – apparently cloves have got all sort of beneficial properties.

Sarah aims to restore the body’s natural balance. Not sure what that really means but afterwards, I felt amazing, totally refreshed and had an actual spring in my step. Had a great night’s sleep later on, too. So I guess balance must have been restored!

As a guide, a 90min Full Body Massage, incorporating deep tissue if you want it, costs £55; a half-hour Head, Back and Shoulder or an Indian Head costs £27.50. Gift vouchers available if you want to give a friend a treat. As well as home-based treatments, Sarah offers treatments in the workplace, and also runs massage pop-ups in Yeovil, Dorchester and elsewhere in the South West. Contact her for more details.

If you’re into the whole luxury spa experience, this may not be for you. But if you want an expert massage in the cocoon of this warm room with log fire (or the atmosphere transported to your own home) , I’d say Sarah’s defintitely your gal.  Or how about an exam-stress-reducing massage for a teenager, male or female? I mean, you’re never going to get a yoof into a spa are you?

I have just had the most amazing stress busting massage with the awesome Sarah MacDermot which caused my anxiety levels to dive instantly.
Sarah’s extraordinary prowess and generosity in putting her hearrt and soul into the experience made for a massage which was totally healing, therapeutic and restorative.
I had a home massage, meaning that I am still savouring this wholly positive experience, reminded by the beautiful fragrances which are still lingering in the room where I was so royally treated.
