Christmas shows and pantos in Somerset

Pantos, musicals, puppetry and adults-only (yes!) – it's the Muddy guide to Xmas shows in Somerset and beyond. Oh no it isn't... Oh yes it is...

The Scarlet Pimpernel, the egg, Bath, Thurs 6 Dec – Sun 13 Jan 2019

An OTT masked hero helps French poodles (and their owners) escape the French Revolution. Marguerite’s got a foppish husband, Sir Percy. Could there be a connection?  From the same team behind last year’s Little Mermaid (Best Show for Children and Young People at the UK Theatre Awards).

The Wizard of Oz, The Brewhouse, Taunton, Fri  7 – Sun 30 Dec 2018

Follow the yellow brick road to Taunton, where Dorothy and pals go on a journey to meet the Wizard of Oz in the hope of fulfilling their heart’s desires, singing famous songs along the way. The Brewhouse Christmas productions are top notch (and they’ve just opened a new cafe to boot).

A Christmas Carol, Bristol Old Vic, Bristol, Thurs 29 Nov 2019 – Sun 13 Jan 2019

Watch as a hard-hearted skinflint becomes the living embodiment of the spirit of Christmas. Sure to warm your cockles,  in the inimitable Bristol Old Vic style.

The Borrowers, Tobacco Factory Theatres, Bristol, Thurs 29 Nov 2018 – Sun 20 Jan 2019

Photo Joe Roberts

Arrietty and her family of Borrowers live below the floorboards of a large house in Bristol. Their world is turned upside down by the arrival of a family of Human Beans.

The Nutcracker, Merlin Theatre, Frome, Thurs 6 Dec – Sat 15 Dec 2018

Community Merlin Theatre Productions have turned the famous ballet into a musical play.

The Snow Baby,  The Brewhouse, Taunton, Weds 12 – Sun 16 Dec 2018

Doris and her Bear Man are happily in love on a hill in a remote forest – until a snowstorm comes and Bear Man disappears.  Family, love and loss, with funny bits, puppets and music. Ages 2+

Snow Mouse, the egg, Bath, Thurs 13 Dec 2019 – Sun 20 Jan 2019

A child discovers a sleeping mouse buried in the snow and they have wonderful adventures together. Awwh. Cute face emoiji. Ages 6 months – 4 years.

The Colour Catcher, Bristol Old Vic, Bristol, Fri 30 N0v 2018 – Sun 6 Jan 2019

Chloe lives in a world that’s all grey but her dreams are in technicolour but shhh, don’t let Her Greynesty The Colour Catcher find out. Heart-warming show about self-expression and fighting for what you know to be true, all taking place in the brand new Weston Studio. Ages 4–7.

Beasty Baby, Spielman Theatre, Tobacco Factory Theatres, Bristol, Thurs 6 Dec 2018 – Sun 6 Jan 2019

tobacco factory

Three people living in a forest are bringing up a gorgeous grizzly – and very mischievous – Beasty Baby.

Cinderella, Bristol Hippodrome, Bristol, Sat 8 Dec 2018 – Sat 6 Jan 2019

Gok Wan (aka The Fairy Gokmother) gives the Ugly Sisters style tips and creates Cinder’s ballgown. Strictly’s Brian Conley is Buttons. With a live orchestra, big stage, big cast and big audience, this is sure to be a humdinger of a show.

Peter Pan,  Theatre Royal Bath, Thurs 13 Dec 2018 – Sat 13 Jan 2019

Photo Freia Turland

Paul Nicholas (East Enders, Just Good Friends, The Real Marigold Hotel) is Hook in a production with flying and CGI special effects as well as all the usual trad panto elements.

Dick Whittington, The McMillan Theatre,  Bridgwater, Fri 21 – Mon 31 Dec 2018

Rags to riches in Bridgwater, with a chance to meet and greet the cast after the show.

Aladdin, The Octagon Theatre, Yeovil, from Fri 7 Dec 2018 – Sun 6 Jan 2019

The Octagon have hit on a winning formula with writer Paul Hendy and cast members Lizzie Frances and Thom Ford. Fast-paced, joke-packed, full of fun.  See their website for performance times and details as the panto’s not on every day.

Cinderella, Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre, nr Taunton, Sat 8 – Sun 23 Dec 2018

Come and have a ball at this community arts centre’s Chrimbo panto.

Snow White, The Playhouse Theatre, Weston-super-Mare,  Sat 13 Dec 2018 – Sat 5 Jan 2019

Will this be the fairest panto of them all? Could be, as it’s starring former glamour puss Linda Lusardi and her daughter, The Voice contestant Lucy Kane.

Oedipuss in Boots, The Wardrobe Theatre, The Old Market Assembly, Bristol,  Tues 22 Nov 2018 – Sun 20 Jan 2019

Photo Jack Offord

The royal kitten Oedipuss is cursed with the prophecy of killing his father and marrying his mother. Anti-Christmas comedy from fringe theatre and arts hub in the centre of the city, puts the romp in anthropomorphism.

Living Spit’s Nativity, Bristol Old Vic, Bristol, Fri 14 – Sat 22 Dec 2018

Silly songs, pitiful puppetry and Biblical befuddlement. All in all, a cornucopia of comic Christmassy crudeness from the Clevedon-based comedy theatre company.

The Gift of Presents, Spielman Theatre, Tobacco Factory Theatres, Bristol, Fri 7 – Sun 30 Dec 2018

Sheesus and the Sistas

Shesus is a multi-gendered Miss-iah reincarnation. The Sistas are genuine twins. Together they have come to heal you through comedy, cabaret and a therapy mash up.
