The Railway Children, The Brewhouse Taunton

Here's a brilliant Christmas show without a boo, hiss or ‘he’s behind you!’ in sight – and you can WIN family tickets!

Last Christmas (not the film, I really mean last Christmas), the clever people at Taunton’s Brewhouse Theatre worked their magic and re-imagined The Wizard of Oz with Dorothy and Toto living in Somerset instead of Kansas before being whizzed away to the Land of Oz.  It worked brilliantly. The production was full of wit, warmth and charm and with plenty of Somerset references, which the audience loved.  This year’s Christmas show looks to be another cracker, a musical version of E. Nesbit’s children’s classic The Railway Children.

The story starts one Christmas, when a happy and affluent Edwardian family are interrupted by a knock on the door. The father, Charles Waterbury, is taken way by the police for supposedly stealing state secrets and sent to jail. With little money, his wife and children Bobbie, Peter and Phyllis are forced to leave their comfortable family home and move to the country. But they don’t find themselves in a cottage in Yorkshire, like in the film. Ooooh no, they come to live in Three Chimneys Cottage in Somerset, with a railway line at the end of the garden.

The railway becomes central to their life as they settle in to their new home, meet Mr Perks the Station Master and have all sorts of adventures – saving lives and emigres, waving red underwear at trains – with themes of friendship, love, home, exile and growing up running through the show. Based on the original 2005 stage musical, with music and songs by Julian Woolford and Richard John, this production will be a corker. Expect to shed a tear or two at the end.

The Railway Children is on at The Brewhouse Theatre in Taunton from Mon 9 to Mon 30 December, matinees and evening performances, with a relaxed show at 11 am on Mon 30 Dec. Tickets from £18.50, under 16s £15 (and concessions). Suitable for age 5+
