The Trading Post Farm Shop, near South Petherton
This former garage turned splendiferous farm shop sells an incredible selection of fresh and store cupboard food and drink (from as close by as the farm behind the shop and as far away as the other side of the world), a refill room, toiletries, chocs, pannatone, Christmas trees (we bought ours here last year) and a brilliant selection of booze – especially gin – including their newly launched own-brand Cardinal Gin. Open Mon–Sat, 9am–6pm, Sun 10am–4pm. You can email a shopping list and they’ll get it ready for collection or local delivery.
Durslade Farm Shop, Bruton
The latest venture by Hauser & Wirth describes itself as a community farm celebrating the best growers, farmers, makers and artisans Somerset has to offer. Needless to say, everything – the arrays of fresh bread, fruit and vegetables, meat from their butchers, foraged finds and more – is of the highest quality, beautifully displayed but not stupidly expensive. Can vouch for the topside of beef, their own classic cure salami and the caneles – all magnificent. Open Tues-Thurs 9am-6pm, Fri 9am-7pm, Sat 9am-6pm and Sun 10am-4pm.
