Eat and drink your way around eat:Festivals

Street food, ice cream, cakes and cocktails – it's all on the menu at the popular West Country food and drink fests

Celebrating the food and drink of the West Country, eat:Festivals showcase over 100 local producers at free street festivals in Somerset and beyond throughout the year. Coming up in August: a mini eat:Festival in Shepton Mallet on Sun 8 August then biggies at Portishead on Sat 14 August, Honiton on Sat 21 August and Chipping Sodbury on Sat 28 August, with more right up until the end of the year.

Masses of stuff to buy to take home – preserves, fermented foods, charcuterie, cheese, spices, booze and more – entertainment, kids’ activities and plenty to eat and drink while you’re there. Here’s a taster of just some of the things on the menu.

Super healthy, super colourful

Through the hatch of Cassie, Hummasapien’s camper van, and down your hatch: incredible hummus bowls and wraps made with Lebanese jackfruit, chilli tofu, seitan shawarma, vegan feta and other plant-based delights.

Thai with a twist

Nosh on numerous noodles, green curry, yellow curry, massaman curry, all sorts of pad Thai and other trad Thai homestyle street food along with dishes with a Somerset twist – pulled pork served with apple chilli cider sauce anyone? – at Pop’s Thai Kitchen.

Shake it up

A day out’s not complete without a Porn Star Martini, Daiquiri, Raspberry Sloe Fizz, Long Island Iced Tea [insert tipple of choice] shaken, stirred and poured for you by The Cocktail Kings.

Don’t be dim, have sum

Have you got a crispy bottom? On your dumplings that is. West Country Dim Sum’s modern and traditional dumplings and baos made using local West Country produce include stuff like pork, prawn and seaweed dumplings; garlic and chilli beef dumplings; crab and sweetcorn fritter bao vith avocado and sweet chilli sauce and char sui pork bao.

Truly scrumptious

One good thing to come out of the Covid lockdown: chef Mike turned his hand to making delicious patisserie, cakes and chocolates and set up Mike’s Patisserie. Yum, yum, yum.

High steaks

Possibly the best steak sandwiches ever. We love their signature sarni, Chimmi the Philly – wafer thin layers of West Country pasture fed onglet steak with chimichurri mayo-mustard dressing, caramelised onions and melty Emmental cheese – inside fluffy pitta bread. Don’t want the carbs? High Steaks do salads too.

Hot diggity dog

Gourmet hot dogs? Not a contradiction in terms in the hands of Street Dogs.

Ice ice baby

Handmade luxury ice cream made from the milk from Chew Moo’s herd of prize Guernsey cows grazing in the Dundry Hills north Somerset. Flavours change all the time but include creme brulee, marshmallow, banoffee pie, coconut and mango, cookies ‘n’ cream, toffee fudge, succulent strawberry and bubblegum.

Big mac – ‘n’ cheese

The Big Munch do clever things with the classic mac ‘n’ cheese, all handmade with Barber’s Somerset Farmhouse Cheddar: topped with slow-cooked chilli beef or local Somerset bacon and deep fried mac ‘n’ cheese balls.

Pile it high

Omar’s Kitchen serves up a combo of Indian street food and shawarma (meat cut into thin slices, stacked in a cone and roasted on a slowly-turning vertical rotisserie – aka a kebab), burgers and loaded fries (like the chicken shawarma ones above). Naughty but nice.

Knock back award-winning cider

Harry’s Cider is made with ultra flavoursome vintage and heritage varieties of Somerset cider apples grown in their own orchards; no wonder they’ve just been voted Best Local Food & Drink Producer in the Dorset & Somerset Muddy Stilettos Awards 2021. Hic!
