Veggie and vegan eats

Get your local plant-based fix at one of these fabulous foodie joints – from a cafe in a field to a Michelin star experience!

We’ve rounded up some awesome vegan and veggie eateries to celebrate National Vegetarian Week. Whether you’re permanently plant-powered or just on the lookout for some great food, here are some places we love.

Dane & Port, Westbourne

There’s no menu at this super chill restaurant. You just take a seat, order your drinks – pressed juices, organic cocktails and wine, artisan coffee – and wait to see what eclectic, aromatic and wholesome dishes arrive. There’s a deli counter too if you want to take away. Closed Mondays.

Mighty Weiners, Bournemouth

Vegan burgers, hotdogs, burritos, breakfasts and brunches – all plant-based and inspired by the owners’ travels around the US. Eat in or order online to take away. Closed Mondays.

Oak, Bath

For a plant-based Michelin experience, head to this Green Star restaurant (and grocery) on the site of the former Acorn restaurant for lunch and dinner – very good value, mains are around a tenner or under – though you can push the veggie boat out with a five-course feast. Wines are low intervention (natch).

f.east in the field, North Bowood

Yummy veggie and vegan lunches, cakes and other nosh cooked up and served from a shepherd’s hut in a field, with views across the Dorset countryside and walks up and around nearby Lewesdon Hill, if you fancy. Tap the postcode DT6 5JJ into your sat nav and look out for their sign on the road. Open Thurs to Sat, 11am to 3pm.

Holm, South Petherton

Field to fork fine dining inspired by nature – most of the ingredients are super local and often foraged – in a former bank. Try the 10-course vegetarian tasting menu, which included maitake mushrooms with dashi custard (flavoured with seaweed for that savoury umami taste) and garlicky pangrattato breadcrumbs (above) when we were there. Read our review. Open Thursday-Saturday for lunch and dinner and on Sundays for lunch.

Twelve Eatery, Bournemouth

Located in Bournemouth’s cool The Triangle, organic plant-based grub with cold-pressed juice and cocktails (yes please!) for lunch and into the evening with an all-day menu that includes stuff like wild mushroom bruschetta, beer battered tofu and chips, satay tempeh noodles and choc orange torte; at weekends they serve up their take on the classic brunch.

Rooted Cafe and Supper Rooms, Bath

Vegan and veggie food from around the world inspired by the owners’ multicultural British heritage, so expect everything from a full Indian breakfast and Korean kimchi hot dogs to Sunday roasts. Friday nights with cocktails and monthly supper clubs with dedicated menus sound fun.
