Where’s the best place to live in Somerset & Dorset?

The Sunday Times has revealed its top spots to live in 2020 - but did your hometown make the cut?

It looks like we’ll all be spending plenty of time at home at the moment, so what better time to appreciate where you’re living (or, alternatively, start dreamily house-hunting on Rightmove)? The Sunday Times has just released its annual round-up of the best spots in the country to lay your hat – its Best Places to Live Guide 2020, takes into account house prices, air quality, good schools and access to green spaces, as well as community spirit – we can all use a spade load of that right now!

Altrincham in Greater Manchester took national top spot (pah!), but four of our local towns – Frome, Wells and Bath’s Bear Flat in Somerset and Lyme Regis in Dorset – made it onto the the Best of the South West list. Bravo!

Bath’s Bear Flat, just 15 minutes down the hill into the centre of the city, won accolades for its lively villagey feel, independent shops, cafes and restaurants.

No surprise to see Frome on the list. The community-minded town’s packed with arty, artisan indy businesses and cafes, many of them located on cobbled Catherine Hill, and it hosts the best street market in the West.

Breathe in the sea air in Lyme Regis. Georgian streets and old alleyways, independent shops, an ancient harbour (and even more ancient fossils) are there for the taking in the seaside town on Dorset’s spectacular Jurassic Coast.

Lyme Regis

A magnificent cathedral, indy shops and cafes, a twice-weekly market, and a growing reputation as a festival town with annual theatre, food, literary and comedy fests, as well as the nearby Mendip Hills and Somerset Levels put Wells on the list.

If you’re not in one of these four places for the foreseeable (let’s not even guess what month we’ll be allowed our of own homes), take a look at who else made the cut in our area.
