In the artist’s studio: Emma Rose

Emma Rose had a career in London – in the theatre, film, dance and photography – before she discovered her true vocation: in front of an easel

The award-winning artist exhibits all over the West Country and London but I managed to grab Emma Rose just after her return from the Surrey Contemporary Art Fair (where she pretty much sold out), at her studio in the pretty village of Wellow, just a few miles south of Bath.

It’s an arty village, where pop-art king Peter Blake founded the Brotherhood of Ruralists and home of master sculptor Peter Watts, and her studio in Knight’s Barn overlooks such gorgeous countryside, that even I started feeling inspired to pick up a paintbrush.

Emma’s one of those people who can create artworks out of everything. The shoes on the left represent some of the important stages in her life, from little pink ballet pumps she wore as a child, through desert boots worn when travelling the world, to her wedding shoes and down to the ballet shoes worn by her own daughters. And even the paint-splattered aprons could be hung on the wall.

Inspired by skylines – landscape, sky, sea – and by nature, memory and the ancient Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi (which accepts the imperfect and transient nature of life) as well as her vivid imagination, Emma uses Indian Inks and acrylics to make vibrant contemporary, semi-abstract and impressionistic paintings.

Colours are luscious.

Night Divine, 100cm x 100cm £1,500

Bold strokes create depth and texture.

Powder Perfect 60cm x 60cm, £520

Much of the work is on a large scale but not all.

Hot Sea, triptych, 30cm x 30cm, £450

She loves taking on commissions and is such a lovely easy person to talk to, the process wouldn’t be at all intimidating. Working from a photo, sketch or from conversations – even emails – she produce paintings that complement the room where the painting will hang as well as reflecting the new owners’ personalities.

They’re not all about nature, this is a cityscape.

Sunset over Bath

Inspired by guess who?

Free Flow, 100 cm x 180cm

Go see for yourself, she’s holding an Open Studio and sale of original paintings, limited edition giclée prints (framed and unframed), canvas prints and cards, in Knight’s Barn in Wellow, Thurs 27 to Sat 30 June, 11am – 5pm each day.

Emma Rose Artworks, Knight’s Barn, Wellow, Bath BA2 8Q. Tel 07885 235 915 /01225 837 80.
