DAY CAMPS & COURSES

Adventure Day Camps, The Mill on the Brue, Bruton

Give the kids the time of their lives zooming down a 220m zip wire, learning bush craft skills, rafting, tackling the high ropes and more in 25 glorious acres and under expert supervision. Five different activities each day and with over 40 available, no two days will ever be the same. From Mon 3 Aug to Fri 4 Sept, 8.45am – 4.pm, bring your own lunch, suitable 8-15 years. £45/day £190/week. Read our review.

Summer Cookery Club, Flavours School of Cookery, Bournemouth, various dates throughout the summer

A tasty array of cookery classes – Chinese hotpot, gourmet pizza, American diner – on the menu.

Wimbleball Lake Summer Programme, nr Brompton Regis, Exmoor, until Sun 30 Aug

Have a go at stand up paddleboarding, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, windsurfing and archery (presumably on dry land). There’s a campsite if you want to make a few days of it.

Summer Assembly 2020, the egg, Bath

Online summer school for 12-18s interested in performing and making theatre. An ’assembly’ workshop every morning, workshops, Q&As and one-to-one idea development sessions with industry professionals (you create your own timetable). Adventure Club, French Weir Park, Taunton, Mondays and Fridays throughout August

Kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, canoeing, tree climbing and more. Come for one day or every day. £35/day. From 9.30am–5.30pm, suitable 8 –16 years.

Football, athletics, golf, rugby, tennis, netball, hockey – can’t decide? There’s a multi-activity course too. Suitable for 5-17 years.

Online Youth masterclasses, The Brewhouse Theatre & Arts Centre, Taunton

Write stories, compose music for the sound track of a community film, make masks and learn dance moves with the stars of West End shows (Six, Hamilton, We Will Rock You, Wicked) – and all online. Suitable 11–18 years. From £5.

Dangerous Dave, ECOS Amphitheatre, Frome, Sat 1 Aug

In Noisy Oyster’s wacky family show Dangerous Dave and sidekick, Herbert Lemon, perform mind-bindingly silly stunts in Frome’s unique stone amphitheatre (bring a cushion).

The Wonderful Wizard of Ox, Glastonbury Abbey, Glastonbury, Sat 15 Aug

We’re not in Kanvas anymore: it’s over to Glastonbury where four actors with puppets recreate Frank Baum’s famous tale in the grounds of the ruined abbey.

Alice in Lockdown, The Bishop’s Palace, Wells, Tues 18 August

Heartbreak Production’s brand new, up-to-date – and socially-distanced – adventures of Alice as she goes through the Lockdown Looking Glass.

A drive-in screening, so you can nosh on burgers, milkshakes, pizzas, burgers, crepes and more while you watch from your car.

Drive-in family movies with classic drive-in nosh at Bournemouth Airport: The Lion King, Mamma Mia, Minions, The Little Mermaid, Wall-E, Matilda.

The Emperor’s New Clothes and The Adventures of Dr Doolittle, ECOS Amphitheatre, Frome, Sat 29 Aug

Decision, decisions: the vain Emperor surrounded by sycophants and fools or the man who can talk to the animals? From the fabulous Illyria touring theatre company.

Wind in the Willows, Castle Gardens, Sherborne, Sun 30 Aug

The next best thing to messing about in boats: watching Rat, Mole, and friends have adventures by the riverside (or in Illyria’s production, in the walled gardens at Castle Gardens).

Stand up paddleboarding, Bath, throughout the summer

SUP – stand up paddleboarding – originated as an offshoot of surfing in Hawaii but you – and your dog (yes!) can try it out in the centre of Bath with experts Original Wild. From 8 years.

Abbotsbury Swannery, Abbotsbury, throughout the summer

Watch ugly ducklings turn into elegant swans at the world’s only colony of nesting mute swans. The 20-acre subtropical garden next door is also worth a visit.

A time-travel trail, outdoor play area, interactive exhibits and, of course, all the amazing aeroplanes, helicopters and space technology – and Concorde.

Teen Yoga, Balance the Countryside, Timsbury, nr Bath, throughout the summer

As well as increasing flexibility and strengthening the body, these classes aimed specifically at teenagers, promote self confidence and feelings of empowerment. Great idea from this super friendly countryside gym.

The Front Skate Park, Weymouth, throughout the summer

Wooden skate park right opposite the seafront with ramps every level of experience from novice to extreme. From 6 years.

Badgerwatch Dorset, Dorchester, throughout the summer

Not so much a day out as a night. Arrive around 6.15 and stay until midnight if you like to watch badgers emerge from their setts and forage for food – you might see owls, foxes, rabbits and bats, too.

The 40 acres – adventure area, water play, farm animals, mini railway, tractors – will keep littlies busy.
