DKO Independent Opticians, Somerton

The eyes have it at this Somerset optician, where the emphasis is on a truly personal service, sustainability and a fab range of frames and contact lenses – however much you want to spend.

Established in 1983 by David Kneebone, and now headed up by owner and dispensing optician John Keep, DKO Independent Opticians in Somerton is not your average optician.

Here, the customer is always the focus. Whether you want high end, bespoke designer frames with high tech lenses or just a pair of reading glasses, everyone gets the same level of exemplary personal care and attention.

You can take your time. They allow up to an hour for each appointment so nobody feels rushed. They use state-of-the-art 3D-Oct retinal scanning technology to detect eye conditions at the earliest stage.

There’s no hard sell. The team always assess your own particular needs and advise on the best solution, however much or little you want to spend. They’ll handpick a selection of frames to suit your face shape, style and prescription, including cool brands like Feb31ST from Italy, Etnia Barcelona from Spain, Raen, Salt and Lowercase from the US and Wolf Eyewear from the UK. You can even exchange your new specs within 30 days if you’re not totally happy (for whatever reason); and all glasses are guaranteed for two years.

They care about sustainability. As well as stocking eco brands like Feb31st, Etnia Barcelona and Ecoyou, they’re part of the Opticlean initiative which recycles dummy lenses (the plain lenses in the glasses that you try on) into plastic chips and pellets which can be re-purposed.

If you want prescription sunglasses, magnetic clip-on sunglasses, and contact lenses for almost any prescription including varifocals, they can sort those out too.

Opticare membership is from £7.50/month for eye exams and retinal scans, discounts on glasses and contact lenses at internet prices.
