Located in the small village of Barwick, just south of Yeovil, a visit to Little Barwick House, a country house restaurant with rooms is an eminently civilised experience.
Sip a G&T and peruse the menu from a squashy sofas in a lounge with an open fire and back copies of glossy rural magazines before heading into the high-ceilinged dining room for lunch or dinner, noting the dozens of awards all around the hallway and up the stairs as you go.
Owners front of house Emma and chef Tim worked in hotels and restaurants around the world as well as the acclaimed Sharrow Bay in Cumbria and the 5* Summer Lodge in Dorset before opening Little Barwick House in 2000, so dishes like chicken cannelloni with bok choi sit alongside Cornish brill, saddle of wild roe deer and Devon beef.
Food is exquisitely presented as well delicious; tables are covered with crisp white linen; service is discreet and efficient. No muzak, just the gentle hum of conversation.
AA Wine Award Finalists every year since 2002, the 16-page wine list is impressive, and using their Le Verre de Vin preservation system, it’s all available by the glass – including the Krug.
There are seven double bedrooms (one converts to twin), each with a private bathroom, mostly overlooking the lush gardens and one on the ground floor with doors out to a patio and the garden.
