Mallinson’s Woodland Retreat, West Dorset
Beautifully luxurious, award-winning treehouses with hot tubs and other fun stuff, in an idyllic woodland not far from Dorset’s Jurassic Coast
Get back to nature – in leafy luxury – with a stay at Mallinson’s Woodland Retreat, three award-winning and unique treehouses located in an idyllic West Country woodland, about 10 miles from Dorset’s Jurassic Coast. Cool in the summer, cosy in the winter, it’s the perfect woodland retreat for two (leave the kids at home, this is an adults-only zone).
Featured on George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces and Grand Designs House of the Year; winners of prestigious awards from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) – it goes without saying that the treehouses are super stylish. They’re kitted out with all mod cons and luxury touches too. But there’s also a real sense of fun. I mean, why walk when you can slide down?
The treehouses have been superbly – sustainably – designed and hand-built by specialist craftsmen led by Guy Mallinson, who trained at the renowned Parnham House/The John Makepeace school for craftsmen in wood in Dorset and the Royal College of Art.
Each is self-contained with a private deck, king-size double bed, wood-burner, private hot tub and wood-fired pizza oven, freestanding bath and ensuite flushing loo (thank goodness). You’ll find everything you need from cooling fans to electric blankets, Dyson hair dryers and Nespresso machines to biodegradable toiletries – even the ingredients to make your pizza dough.
The Woodman’s Treehouse is perched up high in the branches of an ancient oak. Sweat it out in the rooftop sauna or soak in the freestanding copper bath.
Dazzle Treehouse does just that, with an exterior inspired by patterns used to camouflage WW1 ships, a gangplank walkway, rooftop funnels and yacht deck floors. Relax in the circular tin bath or just sway gently in the cargo net day bed over the stream below.
While away the hours listening to the birds, cloud-watching – or on the swing – on the Pinwheel Treehouse, laid out like the arms of a child’s pinwheel windmill, with a glass-topped roof to see the sky.
You’ll be set up for your stay with firewood, kindling and firelighters but should you run out – or in need an extra bottle of wine – the open air, self service honesty shop will sort you out.
The nearest pub The Tytherleigh Arms and Tytherleigh Farm Shop are just two miles away; River Cottage 7.5 miles; and you can be in Lyme Regis on the Jurassic Coast in about 10 minutes.
The treehouses are available all year round, with prices from £790 for two midweek nights for two adults.
