Newton Farm Foods
Third generation run farm with a fabulous farm shop, traditional butchery, a licensed cafe and magnificent views, just outside Bath
For three generations, the Gay family has farmed on the Duchy of Cornwall estate in Newton St Loe, just 10 mins drive from Bath. While it’s still a working farm, with contented cattle, sheep and pigs and fields of wheat and barley, you can now buy their outstanding meats and other locally produced food and drink at their award-winning farm shop and traditional butchery. And have a very good meal there, while you’re at it.
The cattle live outside much of the year and can be seen happily grazing on the luscious pastures of the Newton Park Estate, whilst the sheep are satisfied nibbling the grass in the adjacent fields. Meanwhile the pigs are content wallowing in the mud in their spacious pens.
For food and drink lovers, the farm shop is a wonderful, oversized pantry packed full of local cheese, delicious diary, speciality eggs, fresh fruit and veg, daily bread, charcuterie, jams, chutney and other store cupboard ingredients, craft and artisan alcohol. Not just food: kitchenware, gifts, books, greetings cards, wrapping paper and locally grown, freshly picked flowers too.
Their butchers’ skills are cutting edge and they’ll prepare your meat just how you want it. The beef, lamb and pork are mainly from the farm, and if not, from a top class, approved supplier. The free-range poultry is from nearby Woolly Park Farm and Castlemead Poultry. All produce and products are of the highest quality, ethically produced and fairly priced.
Sit inside or out at their welcoming cafe (aka the parlour), once the milking parlour of the 18th century barn and enjoy their innovative, seasonally changing menu – all made to order, of course. The views across the Estate are magnificent and can be enjoyed from the cafe.
Events throughout the year – open farm days, pop-up restaurants, craft workshops and more.
Awards as high as an elephant’s eye, including British Farming Awards Family Farming Business of Year 2016; Taste of the West Gold 2017, finalist Best Farm Shop in the Muddy Awards 2018 and currently shortlisted for the Guild of Fine Foods Shop of the Year 2018 (results out September – watch this space).
Lots of free parking and accessible to all but you’ll never know what you are missing! It’s worth making a tip and staying for an hour or two, to take it all in.
