The Barrington Boar, near Ilminster
Sink a pint, scoff sensational, seasonal food or while a weekend away at this village pub with beautiful rooms in the village of Barrington, near Ilminster
Husband and wife team chef Alasdair Clifford (ex-Michelin star Chez Bruce) and Victoria Collins took over The Barrington Boar in 2018. They’ve retained a traditional and welcoming pub atmosphere but have created an inventive, locally sourced – and beautifully – presented menu mixing Modern British comfort food with European cuisine. Muddy knows all the best places: they’ve won both Finalist and Gold Taste of the West 2018/19 awards and they often appear in ‘the UK’s top pubs’ lists in the national press.
Sunday lunches are exceptional (we know, we’ve been) and their regular 5-course tasting menu evenings sound spectacular (on our to-do list). Best to book.
They took the opportunity over lockdown to revamp their four en suite bed and breakfast rooms (one of which is dog-friendly), situated a few metres’ walk from the main building, overlooking the garden (also revamped) and housed in the pub’s original skittle alley – a feature typical of traditional West Country pubs of this period.
Each room has a king size bed, large shower, flat screen TV and WiFi, Nespresso machine, tea from Miles in Porlock and homemade treats from the kitchen. We love the little touches like hand-pressed seaweed prints from the South West coast, flower arrangements from Flora Ray and Cottage Flowers, sustainable Hog & Tallow soaps (made with waste and by-produce from small farms and cottage industries around Somerset) sitting on specially-commissioned soap dishes by Barrington Pottery. Apple-cider (natch) hand sanitisers and body wash by Mary Temperley’s MAKE skincare brand are also provided in every room.
With lots of do in the local area – assorted historic houses, old towns and gorgeous countryside – it’s the perfect place for a night or two away.
