The Candlelight Inn, Bishopswood

17th century inn nestled in the beautiful Blackdown Hills, with cosy atmos, good food – and their very own artisan gin

Weekend Escapes
Read our review of The Candlelight Inn, Bishopswood

Hidden down a lane just off the A303, not far from Chard, the 17th century Candelight Inn in the village of Bishopswood in the Blackdown Hills, encapsulates the Somerset country pub experience.

Super cosy with beams, flagstones and wood burners;  delicious, locally grown/ sourced food and drink; and the famously warm Somerset welcome.

Two chefs cook up pub classics with a twist (ham and eggs might come with chargrilled pineapple relish; a burger with pulled pork) through to more unusual dishes, like grilled spiced monkfish with parsnip and rainbow chard bhaji.  Lots of fish and veggie options – though their burger and West Country steaks are spectacular. Linen napkins and fresh flowers on the tables are a nice touch.

Wines (all available by the glass); house and guest beers and ciders.

Gin lovers: they stock over 50 types of gin from around the world and one from much nearer to home – their own, made with locally foraged botanicals, and named after the owners’ Irish Setter, Beau.

Monthly gin and jazz Sundays, quiz nights and a charity beer festival in May.

Plenty of walks right roundabouts to work up an appetite or work off your lunch – and dogs and wellies are welcome.
