The White Hart, Dartington

Wholesome and family-friendly farm-to-fork food served up in a medieval Games of Thronesy hall. And a head chef with Jamie Oliver cred to boot.

The White Hart isn’t just any old pub, looming large as it does over the courtyard at Dartington Hall, an internationally renowned centre for arts and music. It’s the place you pop into for coffee and cake or a hearty Sunday lunch after a brisk walk in the gardens. If you’ve not been recently, then go – the new chef Eamon Fullalove has given it a makeover, injecting Dartington’s sustainable ideals into the menu with plenty of sharing options, and local seasonal food (and flowers in the vases) from the estate’s tenant farmers to be found in the hedgerow and harvest fayre. Seem our review here.

Vibe-wise, it’s stunning – a pub of two halves, with a low-beamed area cosying up to the ancient hall, with arrow-slits for windows and a giant inglenook where once pigs would have roasted over open fires. It’s one of those year-round places that segues neatly from season to season: picnic tables and open-air pizza in summer; flickering fires in the hearth in winter. And while most places can offer a loo, view and a brew, because this is Dartington there is so much more: courses and workshops, music and literary events, and it’s a fantastic wedding venue. This place oozes soul and history: you can practically feel it in the trees.
