A visit to the Thermae Bath Spa on the wonderfully named Hot Bath Street is one of the city’s unique experiences.  I mean, where else can you bob around in the famous warm, thermal waters in an open-air rooftop pool, with bird’s eye views over Bath?

The colonaded New Royal Spa is the main spa and where you’ll find the fabulous rooftop pool. There’s another pool on the ground floor too. Both are fed by thermal water that first fell as rain around 10,000 years ago, was heated up about 2km underground, before being forced up out of the ground as hot springs. Mind-blowing isn’t it?

Work your way around the six areas in the Wellness Suite: the Roman Steam Room (columns, mosaics, herb-infused steam); the Georgian Steam Room (garden scenes, fountain, flower scents); the Infrared Room (state-of-the-art sauna which heats you from within); the Ice Chamber (where a giant trough of ice lies hidden in the menthol-infused mist); and the Experience Showers (body jets and chromatherapy showers). Save the Celestial Relaxation Room for last: inspired by Bath astronomer William Herschel, just lie back on heated loungers and space out as the universe unfolds around you.

Enjoy a spa, health or beauty treatment in a little Zen suite of 26 treatment rooms, any day of the week. Spa packages are mainly weekdays only, with the exception of the Sunday Soother and Taster.

The 18th century Cross Bath is a separate, self-contained, open-air thermal bath opposite the main building.  It’s on the site where the Celts used to worship their goddess Sul but today you can worship the goddess Prosecco – the Cross Bath is available for private hire for parties of up to 10.

Head to Springs Cafe Restaurant for a wine, soft drinks and healthy  – or indulgent – meals, sandwiches and sweet treats. No need to worry about money or lost keys – neat little blue Smartbands will access lockers and log treatments and food.

A firm Muddy favourite.
