Exotic shells rubbed over your bod…
Annie from Team Muddy visited award-winning Elements Boutique Spa on the Somerset Levels for a lava shell relax massage. Lucky devil.
When we first visited Elements Boutique Spa last year, it had only been open a few months and we fell in love with it. Perched on its little slope on the Somerset Levels’ village of Middlezoy, with views over towards Burrow Mump, it’s small, perfectly formed and really feels like your own private luxury spa.
Having recently won Best Day Spa in the Muddy Stilettos Awards 2019, we thought congratulations (oh and another sesh? Yes please!) seemed in order. Enter Muddy Commercial Manager Annie, wearing a fluffy white towelling robe.
Over to you, Annie…
After a lazy dip in the infinity plunge pool, time in the steam room and sauna and a flip of a magazine or two in their lovely lounge area, it was time for my massage.
Therapist Carli was ready and waiting in one of the two treatment rooms.
Lava shell massage is a type of heat treatment that uses tiger-striped clam shells for a truly indulgent massage. The clams have been harvested for food in the Philippines for hundreds of years but instead of being thrown away, they are now being recycled and used for lava shell massage.
The shells are heated using a combination of natural minerals and a salt water activator to produce an exothermic reaction. The heat is then naturally transferred to the body and allows a deep tissue massage without the need for pressure. It’s particularly good if you have aches and pains as I did after a strenuous tennis game and want a relaxing massage without any ouchy moments.
The shells are worked over the palms, arms feet and legs in slow, deep moves to warm and de-stress. The treatment is completed with a back, neck and shoulder massage area which eased away any other knots and tensions.
Total bliss – and time for lunch in The Levels Country Kitchen at the foot of the spa – lots of delicious salads, homemade cakes and perhaps a sneaky glass of Prosecco.
The lava shell treatment can be part of an Elements Spa package (to include use of the spa and a light lunch) or booked separately. The cost for the treatment alone is £45 for 30 mins; £75 for 60 mins. Packages from £110.
Elements Boutique Spa is open every day from 10am – 8pm.
