Singapore fling

Join me for cocktails at the rooftop bar at the top of a Singaporean Supertree?

I bet the Hanging Gardens of Babylon had nothing on these babies. Well, at 25-50 metres tall, they’re not exactly babies. Eighteen supersized Supertrees made of concrete and steel and planted up with thousands of tropical plants stand in the spectacular Gardens by the Bay in Singapore – and they’ve been designed by a West Country company.

Bath-based landscape architects Grant Associates won an international design competition to help create this City in a Garden.  Does the shape look a little familiar ? The sculpture on the roundabout near the Holbourne Gallery in Bath is one of theirs.

Each of the Supertrees has a trunk made from reinforced concrete wrapped in a steel frame and then covered with planting panel. The canopy is embedded with stuff like photovoltaic panels to harvest energy from the sun. They’re planted up with around 163,000 plants – bromeliads, orchids, ferms and tropical flowering plants.

Stroll along the OCBC Skyway, 22 metres above the ground, a 128-metre aerial walkway between two of the tree. DO look down – there are great views across the Gardens and over the rest of the Marine Bay. Or stop off at the IndoChine bistro at the top of one of the trees for a cocktail in the rooftop bar or for an Indochinese feast in the lounge.  The trees are even more spectacular by night. There’s a sound and light show, natch.

Elsewhere in the Gardens you’ll find two giant conservatories: the Cloud Forest a 35m mountain covered in lush vegetation and the world’s tallest indoor waterfall; and the Flower Dome, the largest glasshouse in the world, filled with this sort of thing…

Fancy sipping a cocktail at the Indochine rooftop bar this summer? Here’s how: a visit to the Gardens is part of a brilliant tour of Singapore and Malaysia organised by Bath travel experts ECT Travel. Their 13-day trip takes in Singapore and the world’s most spectacular tropical gardening event, The Singapore Garden Festival which is held at the Gardens by the Bay, as well as sightseeing around the city state and noshing on local delicacies. Then up to Malaysia to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site of Penang (temples, Chinese chop houses, trad fishing villages and a rich cultural history) and onto the vibrant, multi-cultural capital Kuala Lumpur. Five star hotels all the way. The dates: Thurs 19–Tues 31 July, from £2909 (which includes your flights, accommodation and more).
