The Devonshire and Combe Down Tunnels and some of Bath’s attractions en route and a wide range of races and runs for all levels, from a 500m Colourburst race (that’ll be me) to an ultra marathon (you?).

Spring Larmer Tree 10 Mile, near Blandford Forum, Sat 5 March

This may be a tough 10 miles with steep climbs, sharp descents but you can run with your dogs and there are amazing views across the valleys of the Rushmore Estate.

The Bath Half, around Bath, Sun 13 March

This one, a two-lap course around the city of Bath, raises over £2.25 million pounds for around 120 charities every year. The Battle of the Bands, local bands playing in different locations along the route, will keep you going.

The Big Cheese, Cheddar, Sun 20 March

Fifteen miles and two thousand feet of fell running around the Mendips. Not one for the fainthearted.

Yeovil Half Marathon, Sun 27 March

One of Somerset’s most popular running events, a half marathon with a 2k fun run thrown in. The race starts and ends in town but takes in the Yeovil Country Park, Elizabethan mansion Montacute House and some pretty south Somerset countryside.

The Weston Super Half, Sat 27 March

Set off from the Grand Pier on seafront, head off around Weston-super-Mare and the surrounding Somerset villages and countryside before finishing on the end of the Pier.

Mud Master, Weston-super-Mare, Sun 3 April

You go under it, you can go over it, you can go through it. It’s not a bear hunt but a challenging but fun 20 obstacle mud and water course in the fields surrounding Puxton Park. What are you up for: 5k, 10k … 20k?

One Fyne Night, near Bridgwater, Sat 9 April

Part of the Dark Skies Night Run Series, these 5k and 10k evening races start from National Trust’s Fyne Court and head off around the Quantocks. Don’t forget your torch!

The Ciderthon, Bradford-on-Tone, Sun 8 May

Only in Somerset: 5k and 10k races with stop offs at some of the county’s best cider farms. Over 18s only. Sure this a good idea? Hic!

Colour Run, Taunton, Sat 14 May

Make your way around the 5k route at Taunton Racecourse, throwing powdered paint at each other as you go. Nice and messy does it. In aid of St Margaret’s Hospice.

Run along the gorge’s cliff top paths, with awesome views across the Somerset Levels and the Bristol Channel. Races from 1k, through omnium (four different running events), up to a full marathon.

Man vs Moor, Exmoor, Sun 19 June

Surely that should be Wo(man) vs Moor? The route, around the Moor’s north western plateau goes through some of the most remote parts of Exmoor National Park, with 10k, 5k and kids’ 1.5k events.

The Swanage Triathlon Festival, Sat 3 July

Six different race options, with swims in Swanage Bay, undulating cycle sections with a whizz down Kingston hill and running up to Ballard Down on the Purbeck Hills. Spectacular views (if you can catch your breath). Sounds like one for enthusiasts.

Bournemouth Pier to Pier Swim, Sat 9 & Sun 10 July

It’s just under a one and half miles swim in the sea between Bournemouth to Boscombe piers, and all in aid of the British Heart Foundation. Ready to wade in?

Pretty loops around Frome and surrounding villages, with 5k, 10k and family fun run as well as the Half.

Minehead Triathlon, Sun 2 Oct

Swim 750m in the open sea (brrrr); a 20km cycle on hilly roads with brilliant views out and back towards the village of Porlock and a 5km run taking in Minehead seafront and the woods of Culver Cliff.

Bournemouth Super Nova, Sat 8 Oct

The 5k run starts at dusk at the Bournemouth Prom and ends near the Run Bournemouth Hub in the Lower Gardens, taking in the Bournemouth Pier and coastal scenery along the way.
