<p>Sorelle (sisters in Italian, because this hidden gem combines the culinary skills of one sister with the floristry of the other) is tucked away on a narrow lane near Motcombe, a couple of miles from Shaftesbury. The whole experience is hand-crafted. Reclaimed corrugated iron sheets clothe the walls, there&#8217;s an eclectic mix of vintage furniture, strings of lights and religious kitsch. Sit with your feet on the floor of loose gravel under a soaring roof of tarpaulin and enjoy delicious home-made breakfasts with excellent coffee, pancakes and pastries, scrambled eggs and focaccia. Grab a light lunch (seasonal salads, sandwiches and soup). Best of all, go on a sunny Friday evening during summer months when generous aperitivos are served with plates of amuses-bouches to live music.</p>

<p>Don’t let the name put you off: this unspoilt cider pub near Radstock has a cluster of taprooms (no bar) where the beer and cider are served direct from casks. Grab a pew (literally) inside the historic interior or head out to the large garden. If a pint of Mind Yer Head or Black Rat is a tad too trad, the pub serves a full range of Thatcher’s ciders and Butcombe beers too. Once a favourite watering-hole of The Stranglers, they even wrote a song about the place. They still have regular live music. </p>

<p>Lost on the Levels between Glastonbury and Wells, this destination pub is something of a local institution. Famous for its live music and ‘80s vibe, it’s the kind of place that you pop in for lunch and end up staying until closing. The beers are eclectic, local and ever-changing. The wine-list full of interesting discoveries; the food several octaves above typical pub fare. There are even a few tables along the pub’s rear terrace bordering a stream. Catch the starling murmurations on a clear, cold autumn day and head for The Sheppey to warm up.</p>

<p>A stone’s throw from Dunster (where Coleridge wrote <em>The Rime of the Ancient Mariner</em>) stands the Royal Oak, where locals and travellers alike have been drinking for 600 years. Set amid the magical landscape of Exmoor, this historic pub with its restored flagstones and open fires is as real as the ales. Food is locally-sourced and seasonal – Sunday lunches are wonderful – and on summer evenings enjoy a sundowner in the courtyard.</p>

<p>With its feet at the water’s edge, the Watch House is a simple wood café on East Beach at West Bay with outstanding views of the cliffs and surf. Unsurprisingly, since it’s run by the same team as The Hive in Burton Bradstock, the food is meticulously put together with an emphasis on fish and authentic wood-fired pizzas. Beat the crowds and go for a bracing walk along the beach before coming here for a hearty brunch. They’ll throw in as much as you can drink during the 90-minute breakfast slot. Not that that is in any way a recommendation of course.</p>
