Atkinson Gallery, Street
Enjoy major exhibitions of contemporary art at this nationally recognised gallery, hidden away in the grounds of Millfield School in Street
Some of the art world’s big names – Andy Warhol, Sir Anthony Caro, Don McCullin, Marc Quinn and Dame Elisabeth Frink – have exhibited at the nationally recognised Atkinson Gallery. And where is this gallery? Only hidden away in the grounds of Millfield Senior School in Street, not far from Glastonbury.
Aiming to support young, aspiring artists and bring high calibre, international art to the South West, the Atkinson Gallery holds major contemporary art exhibitions open to the public, as well an annual MA & Other Postgrads exhibition and an open entry Summer Show. Exhibitions are always free to enter. The works on display are often for sale.
There’s also a unique sculpture collection within the 100-acre parkland, featuring the large-scale permanent sculptures by artists like Marcus Vergette, Glynn Williams and Peter Randall-Page. Grab a Sculpture Tour map from the gallery or download it from their website.
During exhibitions, the gallery’s usually open from 9.30am to 5pm, Mon to Sat. Free parking in the school’s main car park on Butleigh Road. Enter the school grounds through the Gatehouse by the main gate and a nice person will tell you where to go (so to speak).
