The Anchor Inn, Seatown

Jurassic coast walks, fab food and rooms with views of the sea at this trad country pub, right on the beach

The brilliant location – at right angles to Seatown beach, near Bridport – with spectacular views and walks in each direction (Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast is a steep, short climb away), is not the only reason The Anchor Inn is one of our favourite Dorset pubs.

This place has a pretty buzzy atmos and serves great food and drink – seasonal, local and with bit of a bias towards fish – all day, every day.

The breakfast menu, including The Full Dorset, through avocado and eggs to granola with yoghurt and honey, runs from 10 am.

The full main menu, with stuff like gazpacho, Portland crab brioche, battered fish and chips, pulled pork and cheese burger, Saffron fish stew, whole fish and samphire, is served throughout the day.

Booze? Knock back a local Palmer’s ale or a cocktail.

Book for a table inside. Just rock up for outside seating on their terrace or beach-side garden.

With three en suite boutique bedrooms above the main bars with views out across Lyme Bay, we reckon a pretty cool overnighter, too.
