The Hive Beach Café, Burton Bradstock

Muddy says: Fresh fish and seafood, right on the beach, with bracing cliff-top walks in one direction and towards Chesil Beach in the other – and there’s always the sea for a dip.

Situated on Hive Beach at Burton Bradstock, overlooking Lyme Bay and Chesil Beach beyond, The Hive Beach Café is a Jurassic Coast institution.

We love its unpretentiousness, with metal cafe chairs and tables, a concrete floor and tarpaulin walls which are rolled up in summer. The Top Marquee has the best views. In the warmer weather, or if you’re wrapped up warm in the cold, there’s nothing better than sitting outside with the sea breeze in your hair. But above all, we love their fab fresh fish and seafood (and fresh bread and cakes, too).

Come between 10am to 11.30 for breakfast, with stuff like cinnamon fruit loaf and warm banana bread from The Hive Beach Micro Bakery (on the same premises) and hot breakfasts like the Hive Beach full English, avocado or crab on toast, Chesil Smokery kippers and Belgian waffles.

Lunch is served between 12pm and 3pm when you can nibble on a crab sandwich and a plate of chips or go the whole hog (or should we say, lobster), with every kind kind of fish and seafood dish – fish and chips, fish soup, king prawns, whole plaice – and that, of course, that whole lobster. Non-fish dishes too.

Take away homemade bread, cakes and savouries from the bakery; tasteful Dorset coastline-inspired gifts in their little shop.

No bookings:  just rock up and it’s first come, first served. This place is popular so get in quick.
