<p>Exhibitions of the world class artworks at the renowned contemporary art gallery often extend out into the beautiful Oudolf Field beyond the galleries. In <a href="https://www.hauserwirth.com/hauser-wirth-exhibitions/phyllida-barlow/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Phyllida Barlow: Unscripted</a> (on until 5 Jan 2024), sculptures, including ‘PRANK’, a series of seven ungainly sculptures made for New York’s City Hall Park in 2023, are on display in the UK for the first time. Best test the new Roth Bar, with its site-specific artwork and bar created by artist Oddur Roth, ⁠while you&#8217;re there. </p>



<p><em>Opening hours: Garden Weds to Sun, 10am – 5pm; Gallery Thurs to Sun, 12 noon – 5pm; Roth Bar Weds to Sun, 10am – 11pm; Farm Shop open every day from 9am. Entrance is free although they&#8217;d be delighted if you made a donation to local charities. </em></p>

<p>While away a few hours meandering around the 26 acres of lakes, streams and wildflower and native grass meadows alongside the River Frome, dotted with over 120 works by former lawyer turned sculptor Simon Gudgeon and some 20 other artists. Stroll around the botanic gardens (one of just eight in the UK), with over 1,000 trees and shrubs, some of which are under threat in the wild. Over in the Makers Yard, you can have coffee or lunch in The Kitchen, browse crafts for sale in The Store, buy local foodstuffs in The Pantry and view artworks in The Gallery. </p>

<p>On sunny days, with its rocky coastline, birds, sea lavender and blue, blue seas, the Isle of Portland, a ‘tied island’ just south of Weymouth, could almost be a Greek island. As well as good walks, wildlife, and a storybook red and white lighthouse, a disused quarry becomes a sculpture park with work including ‘Still Falling’ by Antony Gormley. PS don’t mention rabbits while you’re on Portland; say ‘long-earred furry things’ or ‘bunnies’ instead. The word is taboo here, perhaps dating back to the times when quarry workers associated their burrows with rockfalls or landslides. </p>

<p>One of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century, Hepworth lived and worked in Trewyn studios (now the Barbara Hepworth Museum and part of Tate St Ives) from the 1940s until her death in 1975. Sculptures and tools are as they would have been her studio. Most of the bronzes in her sculpture garden are still in the same positions in which she placed them. It&#8217;s a delightful place. </p>

<p>Wander through a hillside landscape of exotic and sub-tropical plants with woods, a stream and great views of Mount&#8217;s Bay and St Micheal&#8217;s Mount, to discover some 50 interesting and unusual sculptures made by internationally renowned artists like Richard Long.  There&#8217;s a great gallery with changing exhibitions by contemporary artists, Kitchen, nursery and shop.</p>
