<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-lowdown">THE LOWDOWN</h2>



<p>A farm-to-fork restaurant in a converted ancient cow barn in their home in Sparkford, near Yeovil, <a href="https://www.horrellandhorrell.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Horrell &amp; Horrell</a> is run by husband and wife team Jules and Steve Horrell, who were a central part of the team behind Hotel du Vin and the Roth Bar &amp; Grill.  We say &#8216;restaurant&#8217; but this place isn&#8217;t like any other restaurant we&#8217;ve ever been to; the couple describe it as &#8216;like going to a friend&#8217;s for dinner&#8217; (albeit friends who are bloody brilliant chefs). Read on and you&#8217;ll see what we mean.</p>

<p>Steve specialises in open fire cooking and they have bought their passion and innovative style of cuisine to their first solo venture.</p>

<p>The setting is a delightful garden filled with vegetables, flowers, hens and herbs, all of which are utilised in the restaurant which celebrates its Somerset location.</p>

<p>Chilled-out wedding feast with friends you’ve never met before –&nbsp;it&#8217;s fun, relaxed and sociable, as you sit at one long table inside the barn which is designed to be like a dinner party with 40 guests sharing platters. </p>

<p>Modern rustic and cosy, the interior is stylishly decorated with hanging baskets and festooned with bunting giving it an air of celebration; the shelves are filled with kitchen wares and interesting memorabilia; the table is beautifully decorated with candles and flowers which Jules has gathered from the garden. </p>

<p>There are woolly rugs to keep you warm and wood burners for cooler nights. There is care and attention in every last detail.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-amp-quaff">SCOFF &amp; QUAFF</h2>



<p>On arrival we were handed a glass of delicious elderflower champagne (non-alcoholic) by their charming daughter – Horrells &amp; Horrells is a family affair.</p>

<p>There&#8217;s no menu but everything is designed to be generous, seasonal and as locally sourced as possible. Steve introduces the dishes which he cooks on an open fire barbecue and they come directly to the table, adding an air of anticipation and excitement to each course.</p>



<p>To start, we had slow-roasted tomatoes and peppers on whipped creamy Hurdlebrook yoghurt (similar to labneh) with spiced nuts, seeds, mint and fennel.</p>

<p>Warm, lightly chargrilled flatbreads – which their son-in-law had made fresh that day – were absolutely delicious.</p>

<p>To follow, there was sweet and succulent whole roast chicken marinated with molasses, shallots and thyme, served with crushed Jersey Royals, and samphire for a touch of saltiness. This was accompanied by new season broccoli with romesco (pepper sauce) and almonds which added a tasty crunch, and fresh garden leaves prettily decorated with flowers and herbs. It was a beautifully balanced dish, with plenty to go round.</p>

<p>Dessert was fluffy meringue made with their own eggs (you can say hello to the chickens in the garden), vanilla custard, Chilton Cantelo strawberries, white chocolate shards, garden mint and caramelised pecans. An innovative, yummy, take on an Eton mess.</p>

Horrell &amp; Horrell don&#8217;t charge corkage, either.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



<p><strong>Good for:</strong> small groups of friends, colleagues or families wanting to celebrate a birthday or special occasion. At least two groups we met were treating, or being treated by, their parent(s). Those who appreciate good seasonal food cooked by professionals in a relaxed barn setting. A gift for foodie friends (you can buy vouchers). You can hire the whole place or they can cater your event elsewhere. You need to let them know about  allergies or dietary requirements when booking.</p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong> people wanting an intimate dinner –  this is a very sociable affair – or those who want to linger after dinner. They have a 10pm curfew to help keep the neighbours happy. Don’t go if you want multiple choices, this is a curated dining experience.</p>



<p><strong>The damage:</strong> We thought excellent for the quality at £65 per head including a complimentary aperitif, but you need to factor in your own booze. Sunday lunch £50 per head, which includes a comp Bloody Mary.</p>
