<p>Ramen specialists <a href="https://tonkotsu.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tonkotsu </a>will be serving up their fresh noodles, made daily using mid-century noodle machines from Tokyo and cooked in boiling water for 32 seconds – precisely – in Bath this autumn.  We&#8217;re looking forward to tucking into their signature dish of tin cut noodles, pork bone broth with lardo, roast pork belly, bamboo shoots, beansprouts, half an egg and burnt garlic oil but there will be all kinds of ramen including vegan, chilled Hiyashi noodle salads, homemade gyoza, katsu and more on the menu. </p>

<p>Metal detectorist Kevin Minto struck gold in an Ilminster field in 2018 when he discovered an extraordinary Roman gold finger ring which experts have dated back to around AD 297.  The heavy gold ring, with a finely engraved gemstone showing the goddess Victory driving a two-horse chariot, has now been acquired by the Museum of Somerset. Get your peepers on it at the Ilminster Discovery Day at lminster Arts Centre on Thurs 20 Aug; it&#8217;ll be on display in the Museum at a later date.</p>

<p>Merlin Labron-Johnson’s <a href="https://osiprestaurant.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Osip</a> near Bruton, renowned for its refined farm-to-table ethos and super seasonal menus, has just claimed second place jointly with The Ritz (no less!), in the prestigious National Restaurant Awards 2026. The winner was <a href="https://www.bouchonracine.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bouchon Racine</a> in London. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hix-tricks">Hix tricks</h2>



<p>After closing The Oyster &amp; Fish House in 2024, restaurateur, chef and author Mark Hix is back in Lyme Regis, personally cooking up local produce, some of which he’s foraged himself, at least two evenings a week at his new pop up, <a href="https://markhix.co.uk/marks-pop-up/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mark’s</a>, at The Pop Up Kitchen at 32A Broad Street.</p>

<p>Lighthouse Poole launches their first ever Lighthouse Youth Theatre this autumn. <p><a href="https://www.thebathbrewhouse.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Bath Brew House</a>, the lively central Bath pub with microbrewery is back and revamped with new interiors, menus inspired by beer (Gladiator IPA chicken, Deus stout fondue, mighty beef and ale pie) and a reimagined beer garden with retractable roof, outdoor bar and big screens for the World Cup (if that&#8217;s your thang) and private huts if it isn&#8217;t.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-somerset-stars">Somerset stars</h2>



<p>Elizabethan pile, Montacute House in Montacute, South Somerset, takes a starring role in the new period black comedy <em>Savage House</em> with Richard E. Grant and Claire Foy as a pair of 18th century social climbers. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cosy-cabins">Cosy cabins</h2>



<p>We say the ideal combo: a cabin stay and one of our favourite restaurants on the same organic farm in the Somerset countryside, within a stone&#8217;s throw from Bath. Lyra and Anne are the two <a href="https://www.midfordvalleycabins.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Midford Valley Cabins</a>, with decor inspired by the owners&#8217; favourite books (Philip Pullman’s <em>Dark Materials</em> and L.M. Montgomery&#8217;s <em>Anne of Green Gables</em>), king-sized beds, bijou kitchen, bathroom with lovely toiletries and private saunas.
