<p>Where would BBC period dramas be without the National Trust?  Elizabethan <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/somerset/montacute-house" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Montacute House</a> near Yeovil became Henry VIII&#8217;s London seat, Greenwich Palace, in both series. Those ornate wall hangings behind the ageing, gout-ridden Henry (Damian Lewis) in scenes in <em>The Mirror &amp; The Light</em>? Original 15th century tapestries. You can wander around the house and grounds every day, and there&#8217;s a nice little café. Tudor manor house<a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/somerset/barrington-court" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Barrington Court</a>, near Ilminster, played York Place in Westminster, home of Cromwell’s mentor and friend Cardinal Wolsey, in the first series. The ground floor of Strode House is open; Court House is closed for a refurb. Open at weekends until the end of Feb, and then every day, with café, artisan shops – goldsmith, potter, chair maker, wood carver – and a secondhand book barn. The gardens and orchards are lovely. </p>

<p>The privately owned medieval <a href="https://www.fordeabbey.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Forde Abbey</a> near Chard, became Hampton Court (Henry&#8217;s throne room and the cloisters where Cromwell spoke to Jane Seymour) as well as Margaret Pole&#8217;s House in <em>The Mirror &amp; The Light</em>. The former Cistercian monastery sits in beautiful 30-acre gardens, with the highest-powered fountain in England, no less. Open weekends in Feb for the snowdrops. The gardens, nursery, café, shop and a pottery are open from 1 March – 31 Oct; the house from 1 April –31 March.</p>



<p>Head to <a href="https://www.wellscathedral.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wells Cathedral</a> in England&#8217;s smallest city, which became the Palace of Whitehall, where Henry VIII married his third wife, Jane Seymour. Open every day. Anne Boleyn was crowned in Westminster Abbey aka <a href="https://bristol-cathedral.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bristol Cathedral</a> in the first series.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bridgerton"><em>Bridgerton</em></h2>

<p>Where <em>wasn&#8217;t</em> <em>Bridgerton</em> filmed in the famously Georgian city of Bath?  There were 14 locations in season one alone.  Obvs, the iconic Royal Crescent (home of the Featheringtons), Abbey Green (setting for the Modiste) and <a href="https://holburne.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Holburne Museum</a> (Lady Danbury’s mansion), now a fantastic art gallery. </p>
